In 2024 more than 1.5 million Texans had an active License to Carry (LTC), and more than 290,000 first-time applicants were granted an LTC by the State. An LTC has many benefits for the holder, including:

  • Reciprocity with more than 30 additional States
  • Access to certain marked locations under State statutes
  • Defense to prosecution in certain cases
  • Demonstrates you have received Texas gun and use of force law education
  • Skip the NICS background check when purchasing new guns (depends on FFL policy)

For new shooters, it’s a fantastic first step toward responsible gun ownership. If you’re considering carrying a firearm, we encourage you to get your LTC for the extra protection it provides. That said, there are a few things the Texas LTC does not do:

  • Provide "learn to shoot" training
  • Prove marksmanship skill or prepare the holder to defend themselves with a handgun
  • Substitute for a solid foundational training course

The LTC Shooting Test is designed to be passed by anyone with basic shooting skills, but it’s still important to prepare. While it’s one of the easier qualifications available, people still miss the mark — often due to safety violations or lack of preparation.

The LTC/Assess tool is here to help you better understand the Shooting Test, its safety protocols, and the key things that often trip people up. Based on your current skills, we’ll guide you toward the next steps to feel confident and ready for the test.
